180th Anniversary of Stauf Adhesives

Making adhesives and surviving as a company for over 180 years is a remarkable anniversary for any organization to celebrate. Stauf's history has been a colorful and challenging one, surviving two World Wars and numerous other European conflicts, the Great Depression and other financial troughs, and all the while continuing to innovate, adapt, and remain family owned and operated. We now are celebrating our sixth generation of active family operation of the business.

Founded in 1828 by Eberhard Stauf in Siegen, Germany, Stauf became one of the leading hide and bone glue manufacturers in Europe. Stauf grew its plant there and added laboratory and warehouse facilities as its business increased. In 2002, Stauf relocated to Wilnsdorf and into a new, automated, environmentally safe and totally contained production facility that is the envy of the industry. Included was one of the largest and most modern adhesive research, development and testing labs in Europe. Stauf continues that tradition today as one of the most creative adhesive companies in the world.

As evidence of that fact, Stauf celebrates over 56 years of its wood flooring adhesive that did more to change the application of wood flooring than anything since the hammer and nail. In 1952, Stauf first introduced Rapid M2A adhesive, one which allowed the industry to glue wood flooring to concrete and other materials for the first time. It was an industry-changing event. Wood flooring adhesive and its development has been the primary focus for Stauf since that time. Included most recently is the introduction of its SMP-960 One-Step adhesive that provides a sound and moisture barrier with the adhesive in one step while meeting both environmental and municipal codes for sound transmission or moisture protection.

The second most recent change has been an expansion to the United States in 2002. Seeing the U.S. as its future, Stauf opened its operations there to market and sell its innovative, unique products to a flooring industry that represented huge growth potential. Stauf has not been disappointed as sales have doubled nearly every year. Recognizing that, Stauf dispatched its President to the U. S. to oversee the growth and development of the business. Now Wolfgang Stauf can brag of training an "American" for family management as he has celebrated the birth of his first child in this country.
